Simon Corben, Director and Head of Profession NHS Estates and Facilities, NHS Improvement will give the keynote presentation at the event, followed by a panel discussion with sector experts discussing current challenges and solutions.  The conference programme will cover a range of topics, including innovation enabling significant savings in energy, technology facilitating new methods of patient care, sustainability practices in the NHS saving money, and technology enhancing the patient experience.

Other speakers on the day include: Emma Jane Roberts, Spirit Healthcare,  Emma-Jane has recently been appointed as Managing Director to Spirit Digital.  She see’s digital solutions as supporting forward-thinking care models and having a growing influence on increasing patient access to care and promoting greater provider-patient collaboration.

Jason Dawson, Director of Capital Estates & Facilities at The Christie NHS Trust will talk about The UK’s First NHS High Energy Proton Beam Therapy Unit. The £100m installation of the UK’s first NHS funded Proton Beam Therapy unit (PBT) will be completed, and the first patients treated, later this year. This remarkable scheme has many highly innovative aspects including:

  • The project management team’s ability to persuade NHS England to adopt a Procurement 21 framework facilitating it’s time and cost-efficient development (this was the largest value project of its kind at the time)
  • Exceptional engineering to effectively harness the high energy proton beam technology
  • Pioneering patient services provision
  • Considerable cost-efficiencies i.e. non-hospital accommodation contracts
  • World-leading PBT research facilities

The afternoon sessions start with a panel session looking at the Energy Centre Savings at Oxford University Trust. With savings of over £1.2m in six months. Speakers include Mark Bristow, Lead Project Manager for the Hospital Energy Project, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Mark is the lead project manager at Oxford University Hospitals’ £14.7 million Energy Project. This two-year upgrade of the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals’ heating and energy infrastructure was delivered by Vital Energi with the Carbon Energy Fund providing contractual advice to the trust’s team. This large and complex project presented daily technical, communications, political, budgetary, legal and logistical challenges that Mark, his small team and the Operational Estates team had to resolve without interrupting patient care at either hospital.

Joining Mark are Claire Hennessey, Head of Operational Estates and Facilities Services at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Stephen Lowndes, Director, Carbon & Energy Fund, Fiona Daly, recently appointed as the National Sustainability Lead for NHS Improvement. Will address the audience on The National Programme for Sustainability. Fiona has worked in the health and social care system for over 16 years and has spent the past 8 years driving the sustainability programme at Barts Health NHS Trust. In her new role, Fiona is tasked with leading the national programme on Sustainability within the provider sector, driving innovation and engagement, and providing NHS trusts with critical support to implement their sustainability programmes. Fiona is passionate about reducing health and social inequalities, improving workforce capability and establishing an estate that supports the transition to sustainable models of care throughout the NHS.

Martin Jones, Co-Director of Art In Site presents on Taking the “OUCH!” Out of Emergency: The Children’s Emergency App for Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Art In Site have designed and developed an app for the Children’s Emergency Department at Evelina London Hospital, which is playable on tablets at the waiting area. It helps to reduce anxiety and increase trust in doctors, leading to wellbeing benefits for patients and increased service efficiency.
